POOR MOTHERS’ AND TODDLERS’ CHRONIC STRESS

We examined the relationship between poverty and chronic stress for mothers and their toddlers. We analyzed data from 75 mothers and 71 toddlers living in the United States.

4 MONTHS OF CORTISOL ANALYSIS

The moms’ and toddlers’ cortisol levels were measured for 4 months. Cortisol indicated the presence of stress.

RESULTS: TODDLERS MORE STRESSED IF BLACK, MOMS MORE STRESSED IF…

Toddlers were more chronically stressed if they were Black. Moms were more chronically stressed:

  • If they were Black

  • If they had a Black toddler

  • If they were single, or

  • If they were working
